Mini Living
Competition
A response to a competition brief to design a urban home of the future under MINI's maxim of ‘big life, small footprint’,
As our commuter transport modes diversify and city centres promote clean living, the multi-storey carparks from 100 years ago become neglected. Our proposal seeks to repurpose these concrete structures through the introduction of city-centre, flexible work and living units, ready against rising sea levels and promoting social cohesion.
The units will be positioned on the perimeter, elegantly hanging off the elevations, and providing a safe haven in the inner city for people from all walks of life; people on the go, people who travel, people on a budget, people who appreciate functional and creative spaces.
The hanging pods create vertical communities through diagonal sight lines, shared vertical gardens and through interconnected city life.
In its simplest form the cantilevered space provides for a single flexible workspace equipped with light, air and calm, with facilities to stay overnight when necessary. This unit equates to a single car parking space with additional installed storage for an integrated and convenient micro-home. The units can be interconnected and multiplied and relocated to accommodate more people and more activities; ‘bedpods’ may be added to the single unit to boost the space.
